Group Psychotherapy for Discharged Schizophrenics on Out-patient Basis

Abstract
The auther worked with 20 chronic schizophrenic out-patients who had previously been hospitalized, from November 8th, 1978 until September 3rd, 1980. They were treated in after-care and task-oriented group psycho-therapy. The sessions stated with seven members and thirteen were added.
There were fourteen males and six females. Of the 20 members, 16 patients were in their twenties. ¢¥Seventeen were over the high school graduates, and two were married.
There was a total of 69 therapy sessions. Ten members participated in over 20 sessions without dropout. Four had dropped out within 10 sessions, and six dropped out after one session.
The reasons for dropout were: 1) expense, 2) lack of parental understanding, and 3) group deviancy. The inclusion of female members, extrasessions, and extended sessions all helped the progress and process of the group psychotherapy.
In order to achieve best results with group psychotherapy, it seems necessary that the therapist have good education and training, as well as deep -concern for his patients, and that there be good understanding and cooperation on the part of the parents.
